What Is
Infrared (IR) Image Testing?

INFRARED IMAGING

Infrared imaging is a technology that shows you things about your home or commercial building. It records surface temperatures using an infrared thermal imaging camera. These visible light cameras use heat instead of light. An Infrared camera can detect heat loss, damaged heating systems, air-conditioner leaks, structural defects, and broken windows-panel seals. They also detect the smallest differences in heat between objects (sometimes a small as 1/10th of a degree!). These cameras (or sensors) translate these temperature differences into an image that is easy to understand. A thermal imaging camera allows you to see a picture of an entire room and the temperature difference between objects.

INFRARED IMAGE TESTING

In construction, infrared imaging is used to see heat leaks and faulty thermal insulation. This can affect the efficiencies of cooling and heating alike. Although it seems like IR cameras can see through walls, the reality is that they simply record the temperature of the wall and insulation inside.
This is important in construction to get a full understanding of what is inside the wall.
it can also detect moisture intrusion like plumbing leaks, roof leaks and mechanical failures.

What Are The
Benefits Of IR Inspections?

PROACTIVELY IDENTIFYING ISSUES

Using Infrared technology is important in construction in order to diagnose any issues that are unseen to the naked eye. With an IR inspection, you can determine the amount of work needed before purchasing a property. Proactive routine IR Inspections can be used as a cost-saving preventative maintenance method for property owners. By determining any issues ahead of time, you can prevent these issues from becoming visible to tenants or guests. Leaking pipes, for example, often cause bowing of ceilings and cracks within the structure. IR Inspections can save property owners thousands of dollars in maintenance issues.

IMPROVED SAFETY

Faulty HVAC systems, mechanical issues, and faulty electricity are hazardous and could cause severe damage. Old motors, compressors or pumps could cause many issues in the short and long term of a property. By using IR Inspections, property owners can determine issues and prolong the longevity of their collapsed structures. These dangerous situations can be avoided with a simple moisture inspection. By checking for water leaks, you’re potentially saving thousands of dollars.

ENERGY CONSERVATION / ENERGY STAR CERTIFICATION

By using IR inspections, you can determine any faulty systems and conserve energy in the long run. It can also be used to receive ENERGY STAR CERTIFICATION. In-addition, water bills and insurance rates will also be dramatically decreased.

Do I Need An IR Inspection?

HOW TO DETERMINE IF YOU NEED AN IR INSPECTION

It’s hard to know if you have underlying issues, since these can’t be visually seen without an infrared Inspection. It is always a good idea to include this Inspection from the beginning. However, there are some things you can look for to determine any underlying issues.

SOME RED FLAGS INCLUDE:

  • Ceiling Stains
  • Collapsed glass
  • Tiled Shower Leaks
  • Electrical Problems

if a problem is detected, it is important to seek a solution as quickly as possible.
