Happy Homeowner Tips

So, you are getting cozy in your home and want to make it truly your own. There are several tips homeowners, new and old, need to be aware of when making a house a home:

  1. Know where to find your main water shut off. Broken pipes can spew gallons of water in seconds. You will want to find your main water shut off before a disaster strikes. If you find yourself with water flowing into your finished areas, you will need to react quickly, shutting off the water supply.
  2. We all want to see and display our favorite pictures and artwork, requiring screws drilled into drywall. When hanging images, you need to be aware of what is behind your drill bit. Behind the walls lie plumbing pipes, duct work and wires. Stud detectors can help determine density changes but are not full proof. A good rule to follow is to drill no more than 1¼ inches. Doing so is enough to get through drywall but not enough to reach most piping and wiring. It is also best to avoid areas between and directly above outlets as the hidden wiring will be near.
  3. Trees are beautiful and serve a great purpose, but when encroaching on property surfaces damage can occur and many homeowners will decide to remove them. While there is a large DIY movement these days, tree removal is something that is best left to the professionals. Even small trees can fall awkwardly and removing them yourself is not worth the risk of damaging your property or injuring yourself.
  4. Once spring has sprung, and you may want to add some beautiful foliage to the yard. Much like the walls of your home, your yard also contains hidden piping and wiring. Before you start digging holes consider calling “811”, the national dig safety hotline. They will contact your local utilities company and send someone to mark utility locations in your yard. With this service you can rest assured that you are not going to damage any underground utility equipment. Being informed about your property can save you from making costly mistakes. With this information you are well on your way to becoming a rock star homeowner, eliminating risk at every turn.
